The victim was shot by a man wearing a hoodie sweatshirt. In his flight from the scene, the perpetrator discarded the weapon and the hoodie. The initial collections were done with the double swab method and yielded an inconclusive mixed partial profile.
The case was challenged with the facts that there was insufficient DNA material and a mixture. The M-Vac™ was used to collect from the sweatshirt. Four different regions were sampled. The samples were concentrated using a 0.45 µm PES filter.
The extractions were completed utilizing an organic extraction method, quantitated with Promega Plexor® HY rtPCR assay and amplified with Life Technologies AmpFℓSTR® Identifiler® Plus PCR Amplification Kit.
A mixture with a major DNA profile was obtained from the neck area that helped move the case forward. It resulted in a suspect match statistical weight that was approximately 94.8% higher than that obtained from sampling with a swab. Click here for a full summary.
